OIC Summit 2021 in Islamabad
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization founded in 1969. It has 57 member states. The OIC serves the purpose as ” the collective voice of the Muslim world and works to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world”.
The purpose of the OIC meeting 2021 is the humanitarian challenges that Afghanistan is facing. According to VOA “more than half of Afghanistan’s population, are experiencing high levels of acute food shortages stemming from years of war, a severe drought and high levels of poverty”. Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi stated ” To abandon Afghanistan at this stage would be a historic mistake, Instability could give way to renewed conflict, it could trigger an exodus of refugees to neighboring countries and to the West as well”. Secretary-General of the OIC Hissein Brahim Taha affirmed that a positive atmosphere prevails in the Pakistan capital Islamabad. The OIC Secretary-General also expressed his optimism that the meeting will produce positive results to accelerate relief efforts for the Afghan people. This will be the 17th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.
